Exciting in the third.

By womensbellies  //  News  //  No Comments

The Bellies suffered from a slow start on Thursday night. Coquitlam came ready to play and quickly scored 4 goals, leaving the bellies with ziltch. But rest assured the game wasn’t over.

#18 Tamara Harris, player of the game.

After shaking off the nerves of the first period, the Bellies came back and tied the 2nd period 1-1 for a score of 5-1, and managed to draw 8 minutes in penalties from the Adanacs. The first Salmonbellie goal came from #37 Savanna Smith, only hours after she returned from Philadelphia, where she plays field lacrosse for  La Salle University. Smith was assisted by fellow former Jr. Salmonbellie, #18 Tamara Harris. Both girls are proving to be welcome assets to the team.

The Bellies proved they never give up in the 3rd, winning the period 3-1. Savanna Smith buried another goal, with an assist from #19 June Iwagami-Paushe, sponsored by OpenRoad Auto Group. The Bellies can credit their experienced coaches and the fastest goalie in pads for the spectacular last minute of play. After a timeout the Bellies pulled their goalie and put 6 runners on the floor. Junior call-up Kristi Shanks didn’t disappoint, and scored with an assist from #5 Carla Burandt. After the face-off, goalie Heather Kwok, sponsored by The Terminal Pub, ran off fast as lightening again, and gave #18 Tamara Harris the chance for her second goal of the night, and the last one of the game with less that 30 seconds on the clock. Harris was also assisted by #5 Carla Burandt, sponsored by Stefano’s Lounge & Restaurant.

New Westminster Salmonbellies–Delta Islanders

3 - 4

The first game of the season went well considering the Bellies took on the #1 team Delta Lakers with only 12 players. Both teams played well, but Delta took the cake this time.

The first period was tied 1-1 with a goal from #5 Carla Burnadt, and assists from #17 Chelsea Grover and #19 June Iwagami. Both teams got their jitters out early going to the penalty box twice each.

The Second period went to Delta, scoring twice and shutting out New West, but taking one penalty.

In the Third, New West pushed themselves hard to catch up with a beautiful goal from #7 Lauren Shima. Another penalty kept New West’s dreams of a win at bay when Delta score their 4th of the night. Rookie, #18 Tamara Harris, showed her hot stuff with a goal to bring New West up to 3 for the night, but with nothing to follow Delta remained on top.

Overall New West played some pretty solid offence, but was a little too shaky in the d-zone to take a win in their first game of 2012.

See the Women’s Salmonbellies again at Queens Park Arena this Thursday, May 3rd @ 7pm when they face Port Coquitlam.

Bellies Beat Burnaby 1-0

Burnaby Burrards–New Westminster Salmonbellies

0 - 1

Heather Kwok earned a shut out and player of the game.

The Bellies beat the Burnaby Lakers Monday night in an all out battle for the shut out.

Whitney “Trickle” Masters scored the only goal of the game half way through the first period on a full out break away. She went all the way in tight and was the only Bellie to successfully squeeze a goal by Burnaby’s goal tender.

The remainder of the game was a true battle for the ball, with the Lakers coming on strong with a truly physical game. The Bellies persevered through the beatings, kept their heads up and proved to be the better team for the night.

It was a battle of the goal tenders for sure, and its no surprise that with her first shut out ever, Heather Kwok won the coaches pick for player of the game. Heather’s jersey is sponsored by The Terminal Pub.

Thanks to our most loyal fans, the Grovers, we have some great photos from the last few games. Check out our facebook page to see some of our favorite photos.

The next game is Saturday, July 9th @  2:30 pm, Ladner Leisure Centre vs. the Westshore Warriors. Come on out and support the team!

Bellies Bested by the Burrards

By womensbellies  //  News  //  No Comments

- - -

The Bellies faced off against the Maple Ridge Burrards for the second time this season, and were pumped to improve on the 2-1 loss from the last game. Unfortunately 4 goals wouldn’t be enough to secure a win this time either. However, with a solid performance from step up backup goalie June Iwagami, and some solid penalty kills, and improved offensive plays the Bellies left the floor disappointed but not defeated.

The coaches picked June Iwagami for the player of the game. Thanks for stepping in the net for the rest of us June, you did a great job!! June is sponsored by Canaya- Gyoza.

The first period started out well with a goal from call-up #37 Savanna Smith with an assist from #16 Nadine Barbisan, sponsored by Sapperton Sports Massage Therapy. The second goal was also from #37 Savanna Smith, with an assist from fellow call-up #13 Leah Catton. The period ended 3-2 for the Burrards.

The Bellies continued a strong showing in the second period. #13 Leah Catton scored with assists from #37 Savanna Smith and #3 Katrina Barbisan. Katrina also scored, with an assist from #37 Savanna Smith to tie up the game 4-4 at the end of the second period. Katrina is sponsored by Jasmin Schenk, RMT.

The third period was a struggle for the Bellies, and the Burrards scoring skill made them the better team at the end of the day, winning 7-4.

The Women’s Salmonbellies next game is July 4th vs Burnaby @ 7pm, Planet Ice Coquitlam. The Bellies tied the Lakers last time, and we’re pumped to take this rematch all the way! Come on out and show your support!
