Bellies Beat Burnaby 1-0
Burnaby Lakers–New Westminster Salmonbellies
0 - 1
The Bellies beat the Burnaby Lakers Monday night in an all out battle for the shut out.
Whitney “Trickle” Masters scored the only goal of the game half way through the first period on a full out break away. She went all the way in tight and was the only Bellie to successfully squeeze a goal by Burnaby’s goal tender.
The remainder of the game was a true battle for the ball, with the Lakers coming on strong with a truly physical game. The Bellies persevered through the beatings, kept their heads up and proved to be the better team for the night.
It was a battle of the goal tenders for sure, and its no surprise that with her first shut out ever, Heather Kwok won the coaches pick for player of the game. Heather’s jersey is sponsored by The Terminal Pub.
Thanks to our most loyal fans, the Grovers, we have some great photos from the last few games. Check out our facebook page to see some of our favorite photos.
The next game is Saturday, July 9th @ 2:30 pm, Ladner Leisure Centre vs. the Westshore Warriors. Come on out and support the team!

Bellies Bested by the Burrards
Maple Ridge–New Westminster Salmonbellies
7 - 4
The Bellies faced off against the Maple Ridge Burrards for the second time this season, and were pumped to improve on the 2-1 loss from the last game. Unfortunately 4 goals wouldn’t be enough to secure a win this time either. However, with a solid performance from step up backup goalie June Iwagami, and some solid penalty kills, and improved offensive plays the Bellies left the floor disappointed but not defeated.
The coaches picked June Iwagami for the player of the game. Thanks for stepping in the net for the rest of us June, you did a great job!! June is sponsored by Canaya- Gyoza.
The first period started out well with a goal from call-up #37 Savanna Smith with an assist from #16 Nadine Barbisan, sponsored by Sapperton Sports Massage Therapy. The second goal was also from #37 Savanna Smith, with an assist from fellow call-up #13 Leah Catton. The period ended 3-2 for the Burrards.
The Bellies continued a strong showing in the second period. #13 Leah Catton scored with assists from #37 Savanna Smith and #3 Katrina Barbisan. Katrina also scored, with an assist from #37 Savanna Smith to tie up the game 4-4 at the end of the second period. Katrina is sponsored by Jasmin Schenk, RMT.
The third period was a struggle for the Bellies, and the Burrards scoring skill made them the better team at the end of the day, winning 7-4.
The Women’s Salmonbellies next game is July 4th vs Burnaby @ 7pm, Planet Ice Coquitlam. The Bellies tied the Lakers last time, and we’re pumped to take this rematch all the way! Come on out and show your support!

Bellies beat the Saints 9-4
June 26th was a good day. It was sunny outside (finally) and the Salmonbellies won 9-4 against the leagues new team, the Port Coquitlam Saints.
The first period was very exciting, and full of scoring. Port Coquitlam got the first goal off but it was quickly reciprocated by 4 goals from New West. Call up #37 Savannah Smith scored first with an assist from #14 Robyn Armstrong, sponsored by Fit on 6th. Then came call up #13 Lead Catton, with an assist from #6 Krista Lee, sponsored by Sapperton Sport Massage Therapy. Then #16 Nadine Barbisan, sponsored by Sapperton Sport Massage Therapy, got her first for the night, with an assist from #5 Carla Burandt. . . and then #7 Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games scored with assists from #16 Nadine Barbisan and #5 Carla Burandt. What a run ladies!
The Saints came back with one more, but it was returned with a goal from #9 Whitney Masters, with an assist from #13 Leah Catton. Port Coquitlam ended the period with a third goal, and the Bellies were up 5-3.
In the second period Moody Park Arena started to get hot and both goalies needed a few extra water breaks through the rest of the game. It wasn’t to hot for #13 Leah Catton, who scored again in the 2nd with assists from #17 Chelsea Grover, sponsored by PGL Environmental, and #5 Carla Burant. Port Coquitlam got their last goal for the game and the period ended 6-4 for the Bellies.
The third period continued with a strong performance from New Westminster. #16 Nadine Barbisan scored her second of the night, with another assist from #5 Carla Burandt. #17 Chelsea Grover scored the second of the period with assists from #7 Lauren Shima and #6 Krista Lee. The period ended with one more goal from #13 Leah Catton, with an assist from #7 Lauren Shima.
The coaches pick for player of the game with undoubtedly call up sensation, #13 Leah Catton. We can’t wait until she can play up with us for good. Shout out to Savannah Smith for coming up and helping us out as well!!
Come see our next game Tuesday, June 28th @ 6:30pm vs. the Maple Ridge Burrards in Planet Ice Coquitlam.

Salmonbellies at the top of the World!
Women’s Salmonbellies player, #17 Chelsea Grover, along with coach Keith Gagne, took on a new high for the team this past April. Literally High, like 5364m.
The couple ventured to Nepal in April 2011 to undertake a grueling 16 day trek to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest (5364m), the highest mountain in the world, located in the Himalayas.
Proud to be Bellies, the couple carried a game worn jersey in their backpack for 11 days of vertical climbing from the Lukla Airport (2,800m) all the way to the summit of Kala Patthar, one of Everest’s neighboring peaks. Chelsea said “From the 5545mm peak of Kala Patthar you can get the most epic view of Mt. Everest while your feet are still on the ground.”
Congrats on your accomplishment and thanks for sharing your story with us!

Tough Loss for the Bellies
The Bellies did their best, but came up short Sunday against the Delta Islanders. The 4-3 lost was an improvement over the previous match up with Delta. Over all, it was a good showing for the team and only a few minor mistakes cost us the win. Better luck next time.

#5 Carla Burnadt and #20 Jackie Hansen were the coaches picks for Player of the Game.
The coaches picked two Players of the Game this week, #5 Carla Burandt and #20 Jackie Hansen. Jackie impressed her team with her ability to steal the ball away from the other team time and time again, and Carla kept us in the game creating multiple chances in the offense end and winning 2 goals herself.
#5 Carla Burandt scored the first goal in the first period of the game with an assist from #20 Jackie Hansen. Carla followed up her first g-note with a second in the second period, with an assist from #17 Chelsea Grover, sponsored by PGL Environmental. #19 June Iwagami scored our final goal in the 3rd with assists from #17 Chelsea Grover, sponsored by PGL Environmental and #5 Carla Burandt.
The Bellies would like to give a shout out to the Delta Islanders #10, Leitz, who scored 3 of Delta’s 4 goals, and certainly made the rest of us work to shut her down in the 3rd.
The Bellies take a break for week, but will be back in action on June 26, 2011 when they take on Port Coquitlam for the first time ever. Come see the game in Moody Park Arena @ 7:30pm.

9-4 for the Bellies!
Saturday night was a great win for the bellies, who took on the North Shore Indian’s on their home floor at 5pm, the same time as the Canucks – Bruins Game 2. BIG HUGE THANK YOU from both teams to all the coaches, game staff and one official that showed up!!!
With out a doubt, the coaches pick for player of the game went to our Goalie Heather Kwok. Her amazing performance in net created opportunity after opportunity for the rest of her team to get possession and go for goals in the other end. North Shore has a pension for both 100 mph shots and some in tight accuracy so Heather proved herself absolutely invaluable, once again. Heather is sponsored by the Terminal Pub.
We’re pretty confident that 9 goalies is the most we’ve ever scored in one game, so brace yourself for this events!
#7 Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games, started off the scoring in the first, followed by a goal from
#19 June Iwagami-Pausche, sponsored by Cana-ya Gyoza.
The Second Period boasted 4 more goalies with 1 from #5 Carla Burandt, with an assist from #11 Kait Jones, sponsored by Jasmin Schenk, RMT. 2 more goalies from #9 Whitney Masters ( just shy of a hat trick ), and 1 last one #12 Taylor Smith, sponsored by Pacific Rim Industrial Insulation Ltd. Taylor showed off her running and stick skills when she scored on a spectacular break away to end the 2nd.
Still going strong in the third, we had goals a short handed goal by #14 Robyn Armstrong, sponsored by Fit on 6th with an assist from #15 Kara Crowley. Another from #17 Chelsea Grover, sponsored by PGL Environmental, with an assist from Nadine Barbisan, Sponsored by Sapperton Sport Massage Therapy.
And the women who started it all, was also the one to finish it off. Last goal of the game was score by #7 Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games, with an assist from Nadine Barbisan, Sponsored by Sapperton Sport Massage Therapy.
Our next game is Sunday, June 12 vs the Delta Islanders, 7:30pm @ Queens Park Arena. This is our second match up against Delta, and last game was a tight 1-0. Come out and cheer us on!!!

Off Course in Coquitlam

Rookie #10 Maddi McKitrick assisted on the 2nd goal.
Well, it wasn’t a repeat of Thursday’s game vs. North Shore as hoped. The Bellies seemed to have left their game faces at home Sunday and the win rightly went 4-2 to the young and talented Coquitlam Adanac’s.
Nevertheless, there were some shining moments. The coaches pick for player of the game went to Savannah Smith, a junior call up from the Female Jr. Bellies, who helped to fill up the Bellies short bench. Thanks for helping us out Savannah.
#37 Savannah Smith scored the first goal of the game in the first period, unassisted, as well as the Bellies second goal assisted by #10 Maddi McKitrick, sponsored by PrismTech Graphics. Unfortunately, the Bellies seemed to run out of steam after the second period and were unable to steal any more goals from Coquitlam’s goalie. We’ll take note to rest up and be 100% for the next game.
Come see the Salmonbellies take on the North Shore Indians next Saturday, June 4th @ 5pm in the Harry Jerome Arena. Its sure to be a battling follow up to last weeks game.

Parade Debut
May 28, 2011 marks the first time the Senior Women’s Salmonbellies joined the famous Hyack Parade in New Westminster.
It was a great day for a parade, grey sky’s kept it cool the rain at bay. The Women’s team followed behind the Senior A and Junior A Salmonbellies in our debut appearance, getting lots of support cheers from the streets. It was great to see and hear the especially loud and encouraging cheers from all the ladies and young women as we past by. Yes, we are the Women’s Salmonbellies. Yes, we play box lacrosse. Come see us in Queens Park Arena.
Though only a handful of the team was able to make it out to the parade (it was a last minute entry), they represented those who were absent well, waving from the Jeep and showing off their sponsors. We’ll be out there again next year with some better numbers for sure. Check out a few more photos on our facebook page.
See us tomorrow as we take on the Coquitlam Adanac’s in the Coquitlam Sports Centre at 7:30pm.

Women’s Bellies Win 3-2 against North Shore!
Salmonbellies played the North Shore Indians in an exhilarating, down to the wire game, capturing a win in the last 11 seconds. Adapting to play against North Shore’s Offense/Defense strategy, the Bellies applied this week’s practice to the game situation and made their coaches proud! There was no yelling in the dressing room after this game, just some good cheers and a few beers down at The Terminal Pub.
The fans that turned up at Queen’s Park for the game weren’t disappointed as #7 Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games, scored the first goal of the game in the first period. It was singer off the both poles, assisted by #11 Kait Jones, sponsored by Jasmin Schenk RMT, from #12 Taylor Smith, sponsored by Pacific Rim Industrial Insulation Ltd. North Shore answered back with a tough goal that snuck through the legs of goalie Heather Kwok and the first period ended 1-1. Heather continues to impress us with her outstanding natural ability in the net. North Shore kept coming at her with experience and truly imposing shots on net, but she kept her cool and kept them to only 2 goals for the game.
#17 Captain Chelsea Grover, sponsored by PGL Environmental scored with an assist from goalie Heather Kwok in the second, and again the in last 11 secs of the 3rd to win the game. The assist came from #11 Kait Jones, sponsored by Jasmin Schenk RMT from #7 Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games.
The coaches pick for player of the game went to #7 Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games, who demonstrated excellence in hard working athleticism, determination and team work on the floor. Way to go Lauren!
Next game is Sunday May 29th, 2011, when the team travels to Coquitlam to take on the Adanacs for their second meeting of the year and hope to continue their winning streak!
Come see the game 7:30 @ Coquitlam Sports Centre

Bellies Tie the Lakers 1-1
Tying the Burnaby Lakers last night was a tough break for the Bellies. While the Bellies out ran the Lakers and played an excellent game with over 40 shots on net, the Lakers Goalie denied the Bellies for the win. It was a learning experience in this season’s new rules where both teams pushed the boundaries of physical play for a total of 36 penalty minutes!!! That includes a game misconduct for Burnaby, a good reminder to us all to respect our Officials.
The Bellies goal was scored by #9 Whitney Masters with an assist from #16 Nadine Barbisan, sponsored by Sapperton Sports Massage Therapy. An awesome goal scored after a lot of hard work and digging for the ball by her team mates, Whit took it in close with a jump shot that had the rest of the bench roaring with cheers. The coaches pick for MVP was undeniable this time. #20 Jackie Hansen played an impressive game, rattling the Lakers with her feisty style through out, keeping the rest of her team energized. Her shinning moment may go down in the Women’s team history, as she single handedly out ran the Lakers in their own zone, carrying the ball on the penalty kill while being double teamed the entire time. It was an impressive performance of athleticism and hard work. We commend you Jackie on showing us all how to get the job done!
To sponsor Whitney or Jackie check out our Become a Sponsor information.
The Bellies take a break over the long weekend, but will be back in action Thursday, May 26th 7:00pm @ Queens Park Arena when they face the North Shore Indians. Come on out and show you support. Entrance is free.

Too Short Benched for Victory
Well… we tried… but with 11 players on the bench, and 10 in the 3rd, we just couldn’t keep those Delta Islanders at bay. 6-1 doesn’t sound soo bad when you know 3 of those goals against were scored while we were running down some penalties. Still doesn’t sound too good though.
Prop’s go to #17 Chelsea Grover, sponsored by PGL Environmental, who scored our only goal of the game, unassisted. Also a shout out to the Grovers, those are some loyal fans making their way to Ladner! Way to make the family proud with your beaut of a goal Chels!
Come support us tomorrow when we take on the Burnaby Lakers on our own turf! Queens Park Arena @ 7:30. We’re expecting a full bench and some much better results, but we could always use some more cheers!
We’ll also be heading to The Terminal Pub afterwards, so feel free to join us for a beer or two.

Sunday, May 8th vs Westshore Warriors
Mother’s day brought a disappointing loss for the bellies. Their first time in Victoria’s Bear Mountain Arena, the long floor challenged the ladies both physically and mentally. Tired from the early morning ferry and a short bench they failed to keep up with Westshore Warriors and came up short with a 8-2 loss. Better luck next time ladies.
Happy Mothers Day from the team, and a special shout out to Heather Kwok and June Iwagami-Pausche, our traveling team Mom’s and Mom’s at home. We wish would could have given you a win, but we hope you’ll take our love anyway.
See us next Saturday, May 14th @ 10:30 vs Delta in the Ladner Leisure Centre

Bellies beat the Burrards for a W!
The Bellies took on the Burrards last night in Queens Park Arena, and came out with a win with a score of 2-1.
The Bellies struggled to get their game together against the short benched Burrards, and went into the 3rd period down 0-1. Heather Kwok, rookie goalie extraordinaire, stood on her head once again, the sole member keeping her team in the game. It was looking pretty grim until the last 10 minutes, when the Bellies started to find their speed and decided to play their own game.
Assistant Captain Nadine Barbisan, sponsored by Sapperton Sport Massage Therapy, came up huge in the 3rd with not 1 but 2 goals. She showed true tenacity, and fought hard to get her team the win. Both assists came from Krista Lee, also sponsored by Sapperton Sport Massage Therapy.
Needless to say, the Coaches Pick for Player of the Game was a tie between goalie Heather Kwok and #16 Nadine Barbisan.
The post win celebration took place at The Terminal Pub, a local team sponsor. We’ll be there after more games, so come check it out and hang out with us!!

Thursday, May 5th vs. Maple Ridge
Come see the Bellies take on the Maple Ridge Burrards this Thursday, Queens Park Arena @ 7pm.
Boasting some skilled stick handlers the Burrards pose a worthy opponent for the Bellies. This is sure to be a game where the Bellies speed and endurance will need to out perform the Burrards to secure a win.
Check back here after the game for the final score and a report from Rookie Jenn Turner.

HOME OPENER- vs. Coquitlam Adanacs
Depending on the goal for this game, it was either a success or an almost success! For those of us rookies who were just trying to not mess up, not get killed and learn how to put everything that our amazing coaches and teammates have taught us so far, it was a success. We didn’t actually win the game but a 3-1 loss to start the season isn’t too shabby!
After a successful fund raiser the night before, the Women’s Salmonbellies donned their shiny red jerseys and new team shorts for this first game vs. the winners of last year’s season, the Coquitlam Adanacs.
Heather Kwok, played her very first game as goalie after playing 3 seasons as a runner for the Bellies. Standing on her head, she had a fantastic game, blocking shots and remaining solid throughout! We are so proud of her decision to step into the net!
Krista Lee, sponsored by Sapperton Sports Massage Therapy, scored the only goal for the Bellies, all the while keeping an eye on her own future lacrosse superstars who were cheering on mom from the stands! Lauren Shima, sponsored by Next Level Games, helped out with the assist.
Shout out to the girls on the power play, who were on back to back shifts after a few tough hits from the Coquitlam side.
Next game is Thursday night at Queen’s Park Arena @ 7:00pm when the Women’s Bellies take on the Maple Ridge Burrards! We are excited to keep learning and improving and moving forward into our most successful season!
